U.K. indie-pop phenom Cavetown releases his dreamlike EP, Man’s Best Friend today. Following the release of his minimal, emotional single “Ur Gonna Wish You Believed Me,” the EP reveals a new expansiveness and depth to his songs, which amplifies the sensitivity and maturity that Cavetown’s rapidly growing fanbase gravitates toward.

“Idea of Her” introduces the EP and reveals an intense yearning and romance at the heart of Cavetown’s songs. Over a gently swirling acoustic guitar, he muses the longing of a person so intense that he can barely speak her name. Though his headspace muddy, the idea of feeling so head-over-heels you don’t know what to do or say is all too familiar.

Elsewhere, he dives even deeper into his emotions on songs such as “Ur Gonna Wish U Believed Me.” The track starts off with the acoustic guitar and foggy wisps of his voice — a stark instrumentation for a song about loss. He expresses regret about harsh words said, while sharing the pain he feels in the wake of an argument.

“I don’t wanna see your mom, I just wanna meet your dog” Cavetown sings about on the light-hearted and whimsical track “I Just Want To Meet Ur Dog,” expressing the longing to be with a significant other despite her mother’s dislike of him, and the anticipation of meeting their furry friend.

Even though it can be scary to talk about certain things, I just have to remember those moments when people have told me that a song of mine has helped them. The idea that my music can help someone else get through a difficult time is always so uplifting to me.

It follows the March release of Sleepyhead (Extras), an expanded reissue of Cavetown’s major-label debut that featured unheard demo versions of fan favorites. Since the initial release of Sleepyhead, Cavetown has also released a string of collaborations, including moving tracks with his friends and creative peers like KINA, Tessa Violet, Miloe, MyKey, Sody, and Brye — as well as work with mxmtoon and Chloe Moriondo.
