Growing up in Tennessee, Christian Leave was just like any other teenager at the age of 14, wrestling with uncomfortable social dynamics that made it hard for him to balance who he was with who he wanted to be. That was before he discovered Vine. The TikTok precursor ultimately let Christian understand himself better, leaning into his awkwardness, riffing on puns and injecting dad jokes with genuine humor, and people loved him for it, including a young Tyler the Creator and Kevin Abstract.

Branching off Vine to other platforms, Christian eventually gained millions of followers along the way. Possessing a naturally welcoming personality, the cottage industry that began to form around him was a real business. He had become, before there was even a word for it, a YouTube Star. However, something had felt off until Christian started writing his own songs in 2015.

I started doing social media shows, and I had nothing to present. I had nothing to give. So I was like, I do love music, that is something I would love to do. The more I got into it, I felt like it was something I was meant to be doing.

Now, at 20 years old, he has spent the past few years working out of his bedroom, writing, producing and creating a sound that is at once naive and wise, the product of teenage heartbreak as viewed through the eyes of one who had to grow up just a little too fast. Inspired by everyone from The Cure and My Bloody Valentine to Bon Iver, he strikes a balance between subversive vulnerability and catchy palatability.

After racking up millions of streams and receiving acclaim from office, American Songwriter, coup de main, and more this year, Christian uncovers a new single and music video entitled “Bedache” today via Warner Records. Powered up by exuberant Britpop-style guitars and a fluttering melody, the track floats towards an infectious, yet identifiable hook as he confesses, “All this thinking hurts my head. All this thinking makes me want to drop dead.

“Beadache” continues a prolific 2020 for Christian, as he hits the hearts of the bewildered and befuddled by growing up, yet wide-eyed and welcoming of what could be brighter future anyway. Most recently, his single “No Use” eclipsed 2.2. million Spotify streams, with American Songwriter describing his music as “unique and infectious,” while office praised “his charismatic tone and soothing vocals.” Christian is currently putting together his forthcoming EP — due for release in early 2021.
