North Carolina singer Nick Bonin shares his emotional, genre-blurring new single “In My Head” today via Masked Records/Warner Records. The angst-ridden track seamlessly blends acoustic melodies with pop-punk grit and rap anthemics, but the burgeoning artist’s message is singular: it’s important not to bottle up harmful emotions.

“In My Head” uses a tense guitar riff to underscore Bonin’s admission that weight he is carrying on his chest makes it hard to breathe. With a versatile vocal delivery, he untangles his inner monologue. “My heart’s made of steel, but my brain leaves me broken,” Bonin sings. It’s the sound of turmoil and emotional conflict.

“In My Head” is in the same powerfully vulnerable vein as the hard-edged May single “Next Time It’s Too Late,” which highlighted how brutally unforgiving life can be. That track was Bonin’s first release since 2020, when he shared his breakthrough ra-centric hit “Fell Too Far,” boasting a FaZe Clan-produced music video with over 3.1 million views, and the emo-pop anthem “White Lies.”

Both late 2020 singles addressed mental health and grappled with external pressures to put on a confident front. With “In My Head,” he indulges his instinct to express exactly how he’s feeling — no matter how dark, or how it may be judged.
