Singer/songwriter Ravenna Golden follows her Big Beat Records debut single “R U Joking” with the punchy “Girlfriend Sucks,” co-written by Ravenna, produced by Cisco Adler, Bardo Novotny, Cole Hutzler, and Dylan Brady of 100 gecs, and featuring fellow Hyper pop artist midwxst, who recently signed to Geffen at the age of 18.

Ravenna Golden’s story starts in the suburbs of St. Louis, soaking up the sun and diverse sounds of Blink 182, Green Day, MGMT, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, and Elliot Smith — evident in the style and vibe of her music. It was after taking a poetry class high school that she started setting verses to melodies and recorded a demo on a lark. And then in freshman year of college, she sent the songs to her old friend Dylan Brady who insisted Golden work on a full-length album.

Fast forward to today and Ravenna is a founding member of the Hella and Cake Pop crews and a leader in crafting a unique sound, weaving fibers of pop-punk, indie rock, and electronic mayhem into a vibrant fabric of original noise. Her music can be described as a little bit bubblegum with a whole lot of bite, and the creation of her 2015 album Girl Gone Wild was proof that music was Ravenna’s destiny — especially performing on stage.

We spoke to Ravenna and learned more about her latest release “Girlfriend Sucks”.

You have begun to embrace heavier electronics, blasting nightcore rhythms, and lean towards the hyper-pop genre in recent years. Why is it important to you that you continue to defy classification at the same time?

I’ve always done what I think sounds cool. I’ve been making nightcore music since 2015, it’s only in more recent times that it’s come out for other people.

What is the inspiration behind “Girlfriend Sucks”?

We’ve all had a friend in a relationship with someone who wasn’t right for them and it somehow becomes your problem, right? It’s about that.

Would “empowering” be an adjective you’d use to describe the single?

I would say more angsty.

How do the visuals in the music video tie into the storytelling of “Girlfriend Sucks”?

I think that the visuals match the pop-punk era that the production is inspired by.

What film or TV series would you put “Girlfriend Sucks” in?

Not sure. But a lot of people have told me they get “Freaky Friday” vibes.

You recently signed with Big Beat Records. How has that journey been?

Overwhelming! But time will tell.

What is on the horizon for Ravenna Golden?

Music and money I hope! And more shows.

Ravenna Golden’s signing with Big Beat Records is just the beginning of the singer/songwriter’s journey, and you’ll definitely want to stay tuned for much more to come from her!
