Madeline the Person & Adam Melchor Team Up on New Single "August"

The growing pains of physical and emotional distance can be heard on Madeline The Person’s latest single, “August” which features label mate, Adam Melchor.

When a record’s focus is primarily piano and vocals, there’s no glamorous curtain to hide behind. The emotions and story become the heart of the listening experience. Madeline and Adam’s harmonies mixed with their conversational lyricism equate the record to a relatable heartbreak catharsis. The line, “I glued my fingers together, and you can’t see the ground in my room,” resonates as heartache can have an impact on how we maintain our environment.

I wrote ‘August’ at a time of my life that was full of lovesickness and missing someone I had just begun a relationship with. The song is an expression of how much of a mess I was when my biggest crush ever had to live across the country. I felt silly for missing someone so much and falling apart about it. The line about gluing my fingers together actually happened. I was making jewelry to get my mind off of the longing in my heart and the metal adhesive got all over my hands and I truly panicked trying to pull my hands apart. I looked around my room and realized it was the messiest it has ever been and I thought, “Okay, this is a song,” and I wrote it as soon as I got my fingers unstuck.

The visual directed by Angela Kohler beautifully shows how time blends together when one processes longing and missing someone we feel strongly for. The 70s aesthetic, stunning cinematography and clever storytelling in direction and editing truly brought “August’s” story to life. Madeleine and Adam not only sound fantastic on the record, but their collaboration on the music video elevated the song to another level.

I wanted the music video to show Adam and I occupying the same space at different times. I wanted to bring light to the parallels in our separate ways of going through the motions and how much it makes your heartache to witness. Adam was incredible to work with. I can’t imagine someone being more eager to do the silly things I suggested for the video. I had so much fun styling him and doing his makeup. He really wanted to bring my vision to life, and I’m so grateful for that.

August may be moving along, but “August” will truly be a staple for any lonely heart’s playlist.
