We loved our conversation with Malia Civetz and she’s back with a brand new single! “When You're Lonely,” a downtempo declaration of hard-won self-respect that showcases her powerhouse voice over a gently thrumming beat. The Warner Records single arrives alongside an official video, in which Malia stands her ground against a lover who takes her for granted.

It’s so empowering to realize how you deserve to be treated and how important it is to prioritize yourself. You’re worth more than being someone’s backup plan.

Civetz is currently preparing a new EP for April. To give fans a taste of what's to come, she’ll perform “When You're Lonely” on Earmilk's Instagram Live on February 23 at 8:30 p.m. ET / 5:30 p.m. PT. Last month, the site named her one of 2021's Artists to Watch. “She possessed some real star quality,” they enthused. “Next year we're going to be seeing even more of her.” This performance will follow Civetz’s intimate rendition of her 2018 single “Little Victories” at the Elvis Duran Stay at Home Ball, during which she belted the song from the armrest of a couch.

“When You're Lonely” is Civetz's first new single since 2020’s The Flip. That acclaimed EP includes: the triumphant “Broke Boy,” which has amassed more than 11 million streams on Spotify; the slinky “Love Thing,” a collab with rising hip-hop star Yung Baby Tate; and the rollerskate-ready “Disrespectful.”

Praised for her sex-positive, self-affirming vision of pop by a slew of outlets including The A.V. Club, American Songwriter, Flaunt, and Paper, Civetz is signed to Friends With Pens, run by her longtime collaborators and “songwriting dads”Ross Golan (Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande) and J Kash(Maroon 5, Charlie Puth). Civetz has also appeared on the “Taylor Swift's Favorite Songs” playlist and On Air with Ryan Seacrest, and was the opening act for JoJo's 2018 Leaks, Covers & Mixtapes Tour. Emotional new singles like “When You’re Lonely” prove to the world what these tastemakers already know—that Civetz is fast becoming one of pop’s most affecting stars.
